KINO-DOC documentary film core was established in December 2012, with the aim of running two documentary film courses (beginner, and advanced in the second year) with innovative programs that provide technical skills for both professionals and students from different areas of expertise. The courses teach the techniques of cinema from a theoretical point of view, mainly through the watching and discussing of those films which are most relevant within the history of documentary filmmaking. In practical terms the courses enable trainees to film with up-to-date high resolution and low-cost cameras, digitally edit their work, and learn other post-production procedures on their computers.
KINO-DOC courses are designed to be rigorous, inexpensive and to incorporate an artistic approach to video that takes into account the constant innovative possibilities in the audiovisual world, allowing each participant to go through the entire cinematic process, finishing the course with a self-made film (a short movie in the 1st year and a feature film in the 2nd year).
The accessibility and flexibility of our methods show the main purpose of this project: to enhance the democratization of the art of filmmaking.
Our training sessions have been attended by dozens of people with or without previous knowledge in video and cinema, who have developed different sorts of films (documentaries of a social nature, biographical or scientific documentaries, docufictions, etc.), some of them with screenings in prestigious festivals such as Visions du Réel, MoMA/Doc Fortnight or Doclisboa.
We have a partnership with OPTEC, a film company (that produces the films directed by Pedro Costa) which has a video equipment store where kino-dockers can find huge discounts, among other benefits. KINO-DOC has collaborated with diverse entities, such as the University of Lisbon, the University of Porto, Casa da Imprensa (the Portuguese House of Press) and the film festivals Doclisboa and Olhares do Mediterrâneo.
Our courses are certified by DGERT – Quality and Accreditation Services of the Portuguese Labour Ministry. They are subject to tax deduction and provide professional training certificates.
